A Kingdom on Earth is a documentation of Catholic youth at St. Bartholomew’s Church in Elmhurst, Queens. For over 120 years, the congregation has reflected this working-class neighborhood and New York City as a whole — first Irish and Italian, and now mostly Hispanic.
This project examines the altar servers and youth ministers, themselves children of immigrants, as both the foundation and future of the church. It recontextualizes Catholicism as grounded in material objects, experiences, and community as young people take on the responsibilities of their forefathers and transform the tradition to fit a new generation.
